The 32nd Opera and Ballet Season brings to the Teatre Principal de Palma this striking version of Werther from the Teatro São Carlos of Lisbon. With music by Jules Massenet and a French libretto by Paul Milliet and Georges Hartmann, the work is based on the epistolary novel The Sorrows of the Young Werther (Die Leiden des jungen Werthers) by Goethe.
It has British Graham Vick as stage director, one of the most prestigious opera directors of today for his experimental and revisionist staging, and scenery by Timothy O'Brian.
Cristóbal Soler is the musical director with the Orquestra Simfònica Illes Balears and the choirs of the Teatre Principal: Cor Juvenil, Cor Petitons and Cor Infantil. Cast: Werther: Giuseppe Filianoti, Charlotte: Lorena Valero, Sophie: Irene Mas, Albert: Joan Martin Royo, Le Bailli: Jorge Tello, Johann: Tomeu Bibiloni, Schmidt: Mikeldi Atxalandabaso.
Sensuality, fatalism, sorrowful love, dilemmas of conscience, duels between reason and heart ... Werther is an explosive cocktail of passions and torments.
