VIII Festival Internacional de Música Vila de Santanyí: 'Tosca'

This three-act opera, with music by Giacomo Puccini and libretto by Guiseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, is the second proposal of the VIII Vila de Santanyí International Music Festival. Tosca is performed outdoors on the esplanade of the Teatre Principal.

In this production of Diabolus in Musica, with the artistic direction of Pablo López, starring soprano Maia Planas (in the role of Floria Tosca), baritone Pablo López (Barón Scarpia), tenor Antoni Lliteres (Mario Cavaradossi) and baritone Joan M. Muñoz (Angelotti / Sagrestano), with the accompaniment on the piano by Jesús López Blanco.

Premiered with great success in 1900 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome, Tosca is considered one of the most representative operas in the Italian verista repertoire, for its dramatic intensity and for containing some of the most beautiful arias in the genre. The text is based on the drama La tosca, by Victorien Sardou, and the action takes place in Rome in June 1800, when Napoleon defeats the Austrians in the battle of Marengo.

The VIII Vila de Santanyí International Music Festival is organized and sponsored by the Santanyí Town Council and the Associació d'Amics de la Música de les Illes Balears Aulos. Programmed are five free concerts from July 16 to October 4, 2020 in different spaces of the municipality, both open and closed.
