It was composed in 1917 from a text by his friend the Swiss writer Charles Ferdinard Ramuz, based in turn on a Russian folktale. Its premiere took place in 1918 in the Swiss city of Lausanne.
It is a work for three actors (the soldier, the devil and the princess) and seven instruments: violin, double bass, bassoon, bugle, trombone, clarinet and percussion.
