The Great Hunt is a theatrical piece, written and directed by Juan Mayorga and produced by Teatro del Barrio, that begins with a question: Do you know what keeps you awake at night? Everything starts with a sleepless night aboard a ship crossing the Mediterranean — witness to the history of Europe: it is protagonist, jailer, gravedigger, character-builder, fuel of passions, god and devil, myth and reality. Crossing this sea, so often evoked in literature, a man lies awake in his cabin. Over and over again, memories of other ships and other journeys return to him.
This performance is an inquiry by Juan Mayorga — playwright, stage director, teacher, member of the Spanish Royal Academy, artistic director of Teatro de La Abadía, National Theatre Award winner and recipient of the Princess of Asturias Award for Literature — who describes himself as a lifelong learner. Mayorga is a storyteller and a theatre lover who continually explores its possibilities through writing and directing.
