This ballet premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1862 with choreography by maestro Marius Petipa, who was inspired by the novel La momie de le roman, by the French writer Théophile Gautier. It is one of the great classics of nineteenth-century ballets, and has been represented over 150 years on the stage of the Bolshoi.
