Singer, drummer, composer and actor Pedro Ruy-Blas is a versatile artist who celebrated his fifty-year career in 2014 with the release of The American, which he now presents in Mallorca closing the festival Alcúdia Jazz 2015.
He was born in Madrid in 1949 under the name of Pedro Ample Candel, but his admiration for Victor Hugo as a child led him to choose the nickname Ruy Blas, one of the most absurd dramas of the French writer. He was part of groups like Los Príncipes, Los Grimm and Los Canarios, replacing Teddy Bautista while doing his military service.
His first solo album was entitled A los que hirió el amor (1970), also the title of a song that has become a classic of Spanish popular music. His second single, Mi voz es amor (My voice is love), was banned by Franco's censors to consider it subversive.
It was at that time when Pedro Ruy-Blas decided to direct his music towards jazz creating the fusion group Dolores, where he took care of the drums and percussion. In 1980 he resumed his career as a solo singer, which he has combined with musicals like Jesus Christ Superstar, La bella Helena and Les Miserables.
The title of his new album hides a little story, the one of Pedro still a child whom they called American because his sister was married to a US military from the base Torrrejón de Ardoz (Madrid). Thanks to him he got to know the greats of jazz.
In the Auditori d'Alcúdia he will be accompanied by Victor Merlo (bass), Mariano Diaz (piano) and Paco García (drums).
