Grand opera by Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848 Bergamo) and libretto by Felice Romani, based on the drama of Victor Hugo Lucrèce Borgia. It premiered at the Teatro la Scala in Milan on December 26, 1833.
It has passages of great theatrical effect with romantic music, that exceed in elegance of vocal and orchestral richness other creations of Donizetti. It is one of the few operas whose basic argument is not based on a romantic relationship, even though Genaro falls somewhat in love with Lucrecia. It features the voice of Renée Fleming, one of the most recognized current bel canto sopranos. It will be offered on deferred basis.
