The human voice It is a one-act opera composed by Francis Poulenc in 1958, with a libretto by Jean Cocteau based on his eponymous 1930 play. Its authors defined it as a “lyric tragedy” for a single female character, Ella, played by a soprano.
The opera unfolds as a telephone monologue in which the protagonist converses with her lover. Through this call, heartbreak, loneliness, sadness, and despair are explored with great emotional intensity, making it one of the most moving pieces in the 20th-century operatic repertoire.
New production by the Teatro Principal, within the 40th Opera Season.
