According to tradition, on February the 5, Saint Águeda’s anniversary, it started to rain again in Sencelles after a long drought. It is since that moment, that Saint Agatha (Santa Àgueda) is the patron saint of the town. On the eve of the festivity, there are bonfires on the streets where neighbors roast sobrasada, botifarrons and other type of cold meat. Drums, reciters, and devils live up the night.
The day of the Saint, a mass and the traditional ball de l’oferta are celebrated. This is a dance of simple movements to the sound of the melodies of the xeremies (musical instrument similar to bagpipes).
A typical sweet of these fiestas in Sencelles are the mamelletes, buns that are shaped as a woman's breast and remember the martyrdom to which this Sicilian virgin martyr was submitted in the third century. Full program.
