Piotr Ilich Tchaikovsky terminated composing Eugene Onegin in January 1878. To do this, he had the libretto of his brother Modesto and Konstantin Shilovski, who had based it on the novel in verse with the same name that Alexander Pushkin had published in 1831. The opera, in three acts, was released on March 29, 1879 at the Moscow Conservatory by a group of students.
Eugene Onegin, arguably the most famous Russian opera of all time, is a succession of waltzes, polkas and arias of a high level, a romantic opera in which the protagonists are living a tragedy of passion, jealousy and immovable social patterns.
