Gioachino Rossini defined this sacred composition as "the last of my sins of old age." And, in 1863 the Italian was 71 years old and had retired since more than three decades, although still being flattered by the court to write a new opera. Finally, he decided to compose a mass for the private chapel of the Countess Pillet-Will which he entitled (not without irony given its long duration) Petite Messe Solennelle.
