Art Vocal Ensemble premieres the adaptation in Catalan of El Mikado, a comic operetta with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W.S. Gilbert. Of the fourteen operas that they signed together, it is one of the most appreciated by the public and has been adapted to more languages.
Released in March 1885 at the Savoy Theater in London, El Mikado is set in distant Japan, which Gilbert took to satire the politics and British institutions. The work takes place in the town of Titipu, at some time in the past.
The country is governed by a Mikado, who has decreed that all those people who are seen flicting without being married will be sentenced to death by beheading. This causes great concern in the population of Titipu.
It is not the first time that El Mikado is adapted to Catalan, we must remember the jewel presented in 1983 by the Dagoll Dagom company. This proposal, which is now being premiered in Palma, the tenth production by Art Vocal Ensemble, aims to bring opera of small format closer to the general public.
