‘Llibertats d’orgue: passat i present d’una tradició’

After the Council of Trent - and especially throughout the 19th century - the organists of the churches, during the liturgical act of Christmas Eve and Holy Saturday, could play whatever they wanted, no matter how secular and profane it was.

Between verse and verse of the psalms, they would play long plays with the most popular and well-known melodies, dances, Christmas songs, which were sung by all the parishioners. These musical expressions are known as
liberties of organ and were collected in the notebooks where the organists themselves wrote down the pieces they played.
