Opera in four acts with music by Amilcare Ponchielli and Italian libretto by Arrigo Boito, who signed it under the pseudonym of Tobia Gorrio. It is based on Victor Hugo's drama Angelo, Tyrant of Padua, of which Saverio Mercadante had already composed an opera entitled Il Giuramento in 1837.
This opera was modified several times by the author until finally represented as we know it today in Genoa in 1879. For its spectacular dramaturgy, ballet scenes and choruses, La Gioconda is a typical product of the French genre of Grand Opera. It is offered live from the Opera Bastille in Paris.
