Film directed by Elia Kazan in 1951 which is entirely based on the play of the same title by Tennessee Williams, who also wrote the screenplay with Oscar Saul. It stars in their roles by Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh.
A Streetcar Named Desire had twelve Academy Award nominations, winning four of them: Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor (Karl Malden), Best Supporting Actress (Kim Hunter) and Best Art Direction in black and white (Richard Day and George James Hopkins).
Although Brando made one of his best performances in the role of Stanley (a rustic and violent young Polish descent living in New Orleans with his wife Stella), the end it was Humphrey Bogart who won the Oscar for best actor for his role in the African Queen.
